A HOME BUILT ON LOVE

At Patricia Rhoda Jabangwe Children’s Home, every child is part of a family. We provide a safe, nurturing environment where children can heal, learn, and dream again. Our goal is to raise confident, compassionate young people who can make a difference in their communities.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Currently, the Home has 10 children (6 boys and 4 girls) under the age 0f 18 years. It also provides support to two university young adults who have lived at the home since the age of 8. The children live as a family and share their day to day lives as one big household. The home is situated in the community of Waterfalls and the children access services such as church, health services and schooling from the community. We believe this model is sustainable as the kids will not be institutionalised. This gives the children the opportunity to experience family life and interact with the community as they are just like any other children within the society. The kids are given an opportunity to access education, love, care and emotional support from us and the staff.

We fund the orphanage from our own financial resources. Our monthly budget, which includes salaries for 4 staff, is $1,200. This excludes school fees. We depend on support from well-wishers for food, fees, and clothing. Gogo’s prolonged illness depleted most of her and family financial resources due to medical bills. The home is in deficit as far as school fees ($2300) and water bill ($800). This is an area of highest priority of need.

Since Gogo Jabangwe’s passing in July 2024, Gogo’s daughter Faith and her husband Eben, have taken over the running of the home. We are ably supported by an overseeing manager, Dr Siwela, who is supported by a team of four staff. The board oversees the strategy for the home. This includes one garden staff who grows food on the plot with the children.

The home is in transition and continues to be monitored and supported by the Social Welfare department through this process. The home is in partnership with other organizations such as ACT, Joshualites, Park Town/Mainway Methodist Church amongst others. Current management is continuing liaison with existing and new partners.

The plan is to ensure that the home becomes self-sustaining. The home is on half a hectare of land. We have installed a water pump, water storage tank and plan to employee at least 2 garden staff. The home plan to grow its own produce for subsistence and to sell any surplus to raise cash. The availability of water also presents an opportunity for small scale poultry farming for both domestic and commercial purposes. Our challenge though is the limit in funding to start cash generating projects.
